The Problem

General mental health is on a decline worldwide, according to the WHO : “..In 2019, 970 million people globally were living with a mental disorder with anxiety and depression being the most common...this number has increased by 25% in the first year of Covid alone...”

Even though maintaining a balanced lifestyle and healthy habits is proven to have a direct correlation on better mental health, a recent survey by the University of Scranton found that only 8 percent of adults manage to achieve their goals; that’s a staggering 92 percent failure rate. One NLM study found that 77% of new year resolutioners kept their pledge for one week, but only 19% had maintained their goal at the two-year mark.

User Interviews

I conducted interviews with 10 people ranging from 21 to 60, where I tried to find out about how they were affected mentally and physically the past couple of years, the reasons for them not following through with previous goals and what they would look for in an optimal goal based well-being app.

Major Insights

1. Accountability

When having another person to share their goals and progress with, they are more likely to stay motivated and follow through with their goals since it increases their sense of accountability and decreases distractions compared to working alone.

2. Motivation

My interviewees underestimate how hard it is to complete a task perfectly and so get discouraged and don’t continue when progress doesn’t seem to be going their way. This leads to them feeling more accomplished and more likely to follow through when they see a percentage of the task completed and share small victories rather than big complete goals.

3. Performance

When starting a new goal, there is so much research that goes into how to do things the “right” way that it can be overwhelming to some before even starting to see progress. So an all in one platform that includes information and tips and not only a tracking system would be ideal as it gives the users a more indepth experience and gets them more invested in their goals.

The Average User Persona

The Solution

Engaging in a self-care routine has been clinically proven to reduce anxiety, depression and stress, as well as improve concentration, minimize frustration and anger, increase energy, and improve overall standard of living.

Aspira is a mobile app that combines all the above in helping users maintain healthy habits and work on themselves towards a happier and less stressful wellbeing.

“The American Society of Training and Development (ASTD) did a study on accountability and found that you have a 65% of completing a goal if you commit to someone. And if you have a specific accountability appointment with a person you’ve committed, you will increase your chance of success by up to 95%.”

Aspira makes sure users follow through with their goals by making users choose accountability “buddies” that they can support and share progress with, as well as a streak system. The option to anonymously find common-goal buddies online makes accountability more comfortable for even the most anxious and private users.
